There is usually a moment, sharp and specific, that a musician can point to years later and say, that was it. Sometimes it is a person. Sometimes it is a song coming out of a speaker. Sometimes it is a single sound that lands in the body before the mind has any say in the matter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">We asked the teachers at Tunelark for theirs. What first pulls you toward an instrument often turns out to be the thing you spend the rest of your life protecting in your own students. Here is what they told us.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-family:'PlayfairDisplay-Bold','Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;font-size:26px;font-weight:700;color:#026D81;margin:0 0 14px;padding-bottom:8px;border-bottom:2px solid #F5BD52;\">A hero made it look free<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">For a lot of players, the spark is a person on a stage or a record, doing something that looks like freedom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tunelark.com\/blog\/tony\" style=\"color:#026D81;\">Tony G.<\/a> can name the exact afternoon. &#8220;I was about 14 years old, sitting in my living room with a friend, and we were both huge Rush fans,&#8221; he says. The two of them started talking about forming a band. &#8220;My friend said, &#8216;I&#8217;ll play bass like Geddy Lee,&#8217; and without hesitation I said, &#8216;Okay, I&#8217;ll play guitar like Alex Lifeson.'&#8221; That settled it. &#8220;That was it. Decision made.&#8221; His friend went and bought a bass, Tony bought a hundred-dollar Ibanez Junior Les Paul, and decades later he is still playing, still teaching, and still a Rush fan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tunelark.com\/blog\/neel\" style=\"color:#026D81;\">Neel S.<\/a>, it was watching artists do something that looked effortless. &#8220;I was drawn to guitar from watching my favorite artists like John Mayer and Jack Johnson move people to tears with their songs,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Jack Johnson could play on the beach, John Mayer would walk around on stage soloing his heart out; it just seemed like such a free feeling.&#8221; That feeling is what he went looking for, and what he found once the instrument was in his hands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tunelark.com\/blog\/jason\" style=\"color:#026D81;\">Jason W.<\/a> traces it to one band. &#8220;Metallica is the whole reason I picked up a guitar,&#8221; he says, &#8220;and they&#8217;re still my favorite band to this day.&#8221; For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tunelark.com\/blog\/alex\" style=\"color:#026D81;\">Alex P.<\/a>, it was a player he loved: what first drew him in was &#8220;watching Eric Clapton play.&#8221; For each of them, it began the same way. Somebody made a sound that seemed impossible and completely worth chasing.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-family:'PlayfairDisplay-Bold','Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;font-size:26px;font-weight:700;color:#026D81;margin:44px 0 14px;padding-bottom:8px;border-bottom:2px solid #F5BD52;\">Someone at home was already singing<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">The second kind of spark does not come from a stage. It comes from the next room.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tunelark.com\/blog\/sydney\" style=\"color:#026D81;\">Sydney H.<\/a> grew up inside the sound. &#8220;My mom is a professional singer, so she sang to me constantly growing up,&#8221; she says. &#8220;As a result, I was singing before I could walk, and I never stopped.&#8221; There was no decision to point to, because there was never a version of her life without it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tunelark.com\/blog\/marybeth\" style=\"color:#026D81;\">Mary Beth S.<\/a> describes almost the same beginning from a different corner of the country. &#8220;I grew up in a family of bluegrass singers,&#8221; she says. &#8220;I have been singing ever since I could talk.&#8221; When your household is already full of music, the instrument is less a thing you take up than a language you are raised inside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tunelark.com\/blog\/harry\" style=\"color:#026D81;\">Harry B.<\/a> does not name a song or a player at all. He names a smell. &#8220;The sweet smell of mahogany and formaldehyde emanating from my dad&#8217;s guitar cases.&#8221; Long before he could play, the instrument had already reached him through the lid of a case in his father&#8217;s house. That is how early these things can start.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-family:'PlayfairDisplay-Bold','Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;font-size:26px;font-weight:700;color:#026D81;margin:44px 0 14px;padding-bottom:8px;border-bottom:2px solid #F5BD52;\">A sound, or a stage, caught them<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">For some, it was the sound itself, or an early taste of the stage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tunelark.com\/blog\/gillian\" style=\"color:#026D81;\">Gillian H.<\/a> can describe the physical jolt. &#8220;Hearing solo upright bass with a bow,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Those low frequencies literally stopped me in my tracks.&#8221; That is a spark that bypassed thought entirely and landed in the body. She also knew, on the vocal side, from as far back as she can remember: &#8220;I always knew I wanted to be a singer.&#8221; Two instruments, two kinds of certainty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tunelark.com\/blog\/norwood\" style=\"color:#026D81;\">Norwood<\/a>, the pull came from performing before he had any reason to be self-conscious about it. &#8220;As a kid I would sing songs from my favorite Disney movies to anyone who would listen,&#8221; he says. Then came the moment that sealed it: &#8220;I went to a musical theatre summer camp when I was 10, and that was it, I was hooked for life.&#8221; He has been chasing that feeling, and helping students find it, ever since.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tunelark.com\/blog\/alawna\" style=\"color:#026D81;\">Alawna M.<\/a> found singing almost by accident. &#8220;I joined the choir in the 4th grade (at first to get out of math class) and soon found my love for singing.&#8221; What started as an escape from arithmetic turned into a real vocation. &#8220;From there, I pursued musical theatre in high school, and now hold a BFA in musical theatre.&#8221; Sometimes the spark sneaks in the side door.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-family:'PlayfairDisplay-Bold','Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;font-size:26px;font-weight:700;color:#026D81;margin:44px 0 14px;padding-bottom:8px;border-bottom:2px solid #F5BD52;\">Why the spark matters more than you think<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">Not one of these teachers points to talent as the spark, or a test result, or a teacher telling them they had potential. It was a hero, a parent, a smell, a low note, a stage, a way out of math class. It was a feeling, and the feeling came first.
