It is also a demanding singing job, and different from what most people imagine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tunelark.com\/teachers\/sarah\" style=\"color:#026D81;\">Sarah B.<\/a> teaches voice at Tunelark and knows the work from the inside. She has sailed the world as a lead singer on the Cunard ocean liners Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth, on the Azamara Quest and on the Seabourn Sojourn, after training in opera at the Interlochen Arts Academy and earning a BFA in musical theater. On those ships the cast was not doing one show for a season; they did a different show nearly every night of the voyage. We asked her what the job involves from week to week, what it asks of a singer beyond a strong voice, and what a singer who wants that work one day should be doing now.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-family:'PlayfairDisplay-Bold','Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;font-size:26px;font-weight:700;color:#026D81;margin:0 0 14px;padding-bottom:8px;border-bottom:2px solid #F5BD52;\">A different show every night<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">The first thing Sarah describes is the pace. &#8220;Within a 7 day cruise, you\u2019re singing a different show every night,&#8221; she says. &#8220;One night you have a latin show, the next jazz, the next opera, the next Rock &#038; roll, the next Adele. All mixed in with incredible harmonies, choreography, and fast-paced costume changes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">That list is the heart of what makes cruise singing its own kind of job. A singer might go from a Latin number to a jazz standard to an operatic aria in the space of three evenings, singing harmony with the rest of the cast while dancing and changing costumes between numbers. For Sarah the range was the reward. &#8220;Singing on cruise lines was fantastic for my career as it really stretched my versatility,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">Every one of those shows asks the voice for something different. The challenge there is freshness: keeping a performance alive when the singer has done it hundreds of times and the audience is seeing it for the first time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">At sea the challenge flips. &#8220;On land, you get so comfortable in that technique that you could sing that show in your sleep,&#8221; she says. &#8220;At sea, you\u2019re always pushing the boundaries and doing something different and very fast paced.&#8221; A ship&#8217;s singer has less time to settle into any one show and more material to keep ready at once.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">What both jobs share is the thing an audience notices most. The one constant, Sarah says, is consistency: &#8220;You have to be super confident and strong in every show so that you deliver and connect with the audience every night.&#8221; Every night&#8217;s audience deserves the whole show, whether it is the singer&#8217;s first performance of the week or the seventh.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-family:'PlayfairDisplay-Bold','Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;font-size:26px;font-weight:700;color:#026D81;margin:44px 0 14px;padding-bottom:8px;border-bottom:2px solid #F5BD52;\">What the job asks beyond a strong voice<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">Asked what cruise work demands of a singer beyond the voice itself, Sarah starts with three words: &#8220;Stamina, confidence, and strength.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">Stamina came from the schedule itself. &#8220;When I was performing non stop I used to feel like I had &#8216;cords of steel,&#8217; which was because my stamina and practice was so constant and healthy that I really felt that I could rely on my voice and it could always deliver,&#8221; she says. The phrase is hers, and the cause she gives matters: not a naturally indestructible voice, but constant, healthy practice. Versatility sits on that list too, and she calls it extremely important for certain work.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-family:'PlayfairDisplay-Bold','Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;font-size:26px;font-weight:700;color:#026D81;margin:44px 0 14px;padding-bottom:8px;border-bottom:2px solid #F5BD52;\">Harmony, fast learning and taking direction<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">Three items on Sarah&#8217;s list are easy to underestimate, and each is a skill of its own.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\"><strong>Singing harmony.<\/strong> A lead singer in a cast often sings harmony as much as melody, holding a line that is not the tune while other voices move around it. Sarah counts it as a separate technique of its own, and a singer who has only ever sung melody usually finds it harder than expected the first time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\"><strong>Learning music quickly.<\/strong> With a different show every night, a singer has to absorb songs, harmonies and changes fast and keep a large repertoire ready. Reading music makes that far quicker. That is a skill voice lessons practice every week, because a lesson is largely a teacher giving direction and a singer applying it.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-family:'PlayfairDisplay-Bold','Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;font-size:26px;font-weight:700;color:#026D81;margin:44px 0 14px;padding-bottom:8px;border-bottom:2px solid #F5BD52;\">Knowing when to push and when not to<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">A heavy performing schedule only works if the voice lasts. &#8220;You also have to take care of your voice and know your own instrument well enough to recognize when you can push and when you shouldn\u2019t,&#8221; Sarah says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">That is less about rules than about self-knowledge. A singer who knows how their voice feels when it is fresh, tired or starting to strain can make good decisions night after night: when to mark a rehearsal instead of singing full out, when to rest between shows, when a note can be taken full voice and when it should be eased. Finish the song. If you forget a lyric, find your way back in. If a note doesn\u2019t come out exactly the way you wanted, don\u2019t let the audience see the panic on your face. We can go back and fix it afterward, and mistakes are the best teacher!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">Many students stop the instant something goes wrong, because in practice there is no cost to starting again. On a stage there is no starting again. This comes with understanding yourself, your style, brand, your voice, and connecting with others as a person and performer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">Then comes range, in both senses. &#8220;Next, become versatile. Cruise entertainment can require singers to cover an enormous range of music, so being comfortable in several styles is a major advantage,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Work on your range, sight-reading and musicianship, stamina, harmony skills, and your ability to learn material quickly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">And a voice alone is not enough. &#8220;I\u2019d also tell singers to work on performance, not just vocals,&#8221; Sarah says. &#8220;You can have a beautiful voice and still not necessarily be ready to lead a show. Practice communicating with an audience, moving confidently onstage and telling the story of a song.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">Turned into a practice plan, her advice looks like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">1. <strong>Build songs in several contrasting styles<\/strong>, such as a ballad, an up-tempo pop or rock number, a musical theater song and a classical or jazz standard, so you are comfortable switching.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">2. <strong>Practice sight-reading and harmony<\/strong> regularly, singing a lower or upper line against a recording or a keyboard rather than always the melody.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">3. <strong>Build stamina gradually<\/strong>, by singing a full set of songs in a row and noticing how your voice feels at the end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">4. <strong>Perform, not just sing.<\/strong> Record yourself singing full out to camera, as if to an audience, and work on how you tell the story and how you move.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">5. <strong>Practice recovering.<\/strong> Keep going through every mistake in a full run, and fix the problems afterward.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-family:'PlayfairDisplay-Bold','Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;font-size:26px;font-weight:700;color:#026D81;margin:44px 0 14px;padding-bottom:8px;border-bottom:2px solid #F5BD52;\">Auditioning is a technique in itself<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">The route in is the audition, and Sarah treats it as a separate skill to train. &#8220;When you\u2019re ready to audition, auditioning is a technique in itself,&#8221; she says. &#8220;You\u2019ll want strong audition material that shows who you are quickly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">The routes vary. &#8220;Depending on the job, you may audition directly with a cruise line, production company or casting agency, and you need to know how to audition from the second you walk into the room until you walk out,&#8221; she says. That last point covers everything a panel sees, not only the singing: how a singer enters, introduces themselves, takes direction and leaves. &#8220;You show a lot in just 30 seconds of singing!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">Her last piece of advice is about timing. &#8220;And don\u2019t feel like you have to wait until you think you\u2019re &#8216;perfect,'&#8221; she says. &#8220;Auditioning is a huge skill that is the most important to master. The more you do it, the better you become at understanding what you bring into the room and showing it quickly.&#8221; Auditions improve with repetition, so waiting to feel ready delays the practice that would make you ready.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-family:'PlayfairDisplay-Bold','Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;font-size:26px;font-weight:700;color:#026D81;margin:44px 0 14px;padding-bottom:8px;border-bottom:2px solid #F5BD52;\">Why it can be worth it<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">For Sarah the career gave back as much as it asked. &#8220;A career at sea can also be an incredible way to travel the world and do what you love,&#8221; she says. &#8220;I was able to perform around the world, work with musicians and performers from many different backgrounds, and sing an enormous range of repertoire.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">It also changed her as a teacher. &#8220;Those experiences shaped me into a much more adaptable performer, human, and ultimately a better teacher.&#8221; The versatility, stamina and composure the job demanded are the same things she now builds with her students, whether or not they ever set foot on a ship.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-family:'PlayfairDisplay-Bold','Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;font-size:26px;font-weight:700;color:#026D81;margin:44px 0 14px;padding-bottom:8px;border-bottom:2px solid #F5BD52;\">About Sarah<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size:17px;line-height:1.75;color:#19394C;margin:0 0 18px;\">Sarah grew up in a family where everyone sang and played several instruments; her mother was a voice teacher, and she was in lessons and shows from the age of three and never considered any other career. She trained in opera and harp at the Interlochen Arts Academy and graduated with a BFA in musical theater from Central Michigan University. As a lead soprano soloist she has performed with the British National Symphony Orchestra, at the Library of Celsus in Ephesus, and under the direction of Broadway&#8217;s Charlotte d&#8217;Amboise, and her favorite roles include Velma Kelly in Chicago, Janet Van De Graaff in The Drowsy Chaperone and Lila Dixon in Holiday Inn.
