That is why a slide chart lists several notes for every position and two positions for many notes. The chart tells you which position to aim for, and your ear decides exactly where the slide stops, because some notes sit sharp or flat of the spot the number suggests.

Why One Position Holds a Column of Notes

A brass instrument’s air column resonates easily at some frequencies and not at others, and the player chooses which of those resonances sets the pitch, as the University of New South Wales physics department’s guide to brass acoustics explains. On a trombone those resonances are called partials. With the slide closed, in first position, the notes run B-flat, F, B-flat, D, F, A-flat and B-flat going up, though that A-flat is too flat to use. They follow the harmonic series, the pattern of frequencies two, three, four and more times a low B-flat. Changing the buzz of the lips in the mouthpiece moves the note up or down a partial without the slide moving at all.

Pushing the slide out lengthens the tube, and every partial in the column drops by a half step, the distance between neighboring piano keys, for each position. Second position holds A, E, A, D-flat, E, G and A. Seventh holds E, B, E, A-flat, B, D and E. The arm picks the column and the lips pick the row.

<svg viewBox="0 0 664 562" role="img" aria-label="Tenor trombone slide chart, positions one to seven across, partials two to eight from bottom to top. Read against the chart, the scale makes two kinds of move. From C up to F the lips stay on the third partial and the slide walks in, one position per half step or two per whole step. From B-flat to C, and again from F to G, the note goes up while the slide goes out, because the lips jump up a partial at the same moment the arm moves. Those two changes are where a beginner’s scale tends to break, since the arm and the lips both have to land together.

The second note is also the longest reach on the scale, sixth position, straight after first, where the slide is closed. Brian Weidner’s open textbook Brass Techniques and Pedagogy says the wrist leads the slide, and that slide movement should always be quick, so the pitch does not smear between notes into a glissando, a continuous slide in pitch. Deb Scott, professor of trombone at Stephen F. Austin State University, adds in her Pocket Guide to Teaching Trombone that a trombone has no true slur, the tongue-free change between notes other wind players use, so a light tongue on a soft “du” starts each note while the slide moves. If the bass clef note names are still new, our guide to reading sheet music as a beginner has the lines and spaces.

Why the Chart Alone Will Not Put You in Tune

A chart with seven numbers suggests seven fixed spots. Scott puts the working count at 41 or more, because the partials do not all land where an evenly tuned keyboard puts the same note, and the slide makes up the difference.

Her adjustments go row by row through the chart. Notes on the seventh partial sit so flat that they are played in shortened positions, slightly in from the number, and the A-flat on the seventh partial in first position is too flat to use, so A-flat above middle C is played in third. Notes on the sixth partial, the F, E, E-flat and D just above middle C in first through fourth positions, sit sharp and want a position roughly half an inch longer. Notes on the fifth partial, the D, D-flat, C and B around middle C, want a position about a quarter inch shorter, though she notes that some models need them slightly longer instead. The third partial is close enough that she calls adjusting it unnecessary.

Fourth position has a problem of its own. Many beginners are taught to line the top of the slide up with the bell, and Scott writes that this leaves fourth regularly sharp, because the true position is slightly past the bell. She names the outer notes to check against a tuner most often: G-flat in the top space of the staff in fifth, low C in sixth and low B in seventh. All three sit in the beginning range shaded on the chart.

Bass trombonist Douglas Yeo’s slide chart page says the best chart is the one a player finds in their own ear, by trial and error.

Same Note, Two Positions

Many notes on the chart live in more than one position. The three outlined are the ones Scott lists to learn first: F on the fourth line, in first or sixth; B-flat at the top of the staff, in first or short fifth; and the D just above middle C, in first or long fourth. Short means slightly in from the standard spot and long means slightly out, and Micah Everett’s slide position chart at the University of Mississippi lists the same pairs.

The reason to use them is slide travel. She also says they should be taught early, so a player does not cling to the familiar positions.

A Slow Routine That Teaches the Arm by Ear

The routine below fits inside 15 to 20 minutes a day, five or six days a week. Our practice routine for adult learners shows how a warm-up and a technique block share a session that size.

1. Tune with the slide closed. Scott tunes the main tuning slide, the U-shaped tube behind the bell that sets the overall pitch, to the B-flat at the top of the staff in first position, and lets beginners tune to the F on the fourth line instead. Against a tuner, pull that slide out if the note is sharp and push it in if it is flat.

2. Play lip slurs, moving between partials with the lips alone, in one position. With the slide in first, play B-flat 2, F3, B-flat 3, F3 and B-flat 2 as slow half notes without moving the slide. Then do the same shape in second, A2, E3, A3, E3, A2, and so on out to seventh. Each pass plays one column of the chart, by ear, with the arm still.

3. Match a drone, one steady held pitch. Set a tuning app or keyboard to sound F3 steadily and play F3 in first position against it. When the two pitches are close but not equal, the sound wobbles, and the number of beats per second equals the difference in frequency between them, so the wobble slows as you get closer and stops when you arrive. Then play the same F in sixth against the same drone and find where the wobble stops there.

4. Check the outer three. With a tuner, hold G-flat 3 in fifth, C3 in sixth and B2 in seventh, and remember where each one actually lands on your instrument, not where the chart’s spacing suggests.

5. Play the scale in half notes. Use the positions above, make every slide move late and fast, and tongue every note with “du”.

In a lesson this routine also gives a teacher something to listen to. A tuner shows a needle on the center line whether the slide is in the right spot or the lips are bending a note toward it. Scott calls that bending lipping and notes that it gets the pitch with only an okay tone, while the exact slide spot improves both. A teacher can often hear the difference over a call. With the call app’s noise suppression turned off, a drone on the student’s own device comes through with the note.

Sophie P., who teaches trumpet, trombone and euphonium on Tunelark, has performed with the Oakland and Modesto symphonies and at the SF Jazz Center, and works as a brass player and a singer.
